Cane Basketweaving

New Spring Series of workshops held at the magical sanctuary of The Onion Garden, nestled down a London street and promising a calming morning of creative relaxation.
Come and learn how to make a woven basket using the traditional English stake and strand basket.
Ideal for beginners, we will be using cane which is a great material to learn with as it's easier on the hands than willow and allows you to focus on the technique and rhythm of weaving.

Coiling with Raffia
Saturday 12th April
Immerse yourself in the calm and rhythmical technique of coiling, an ancient and versatile technique that is used worldwide with the materials adapting to the native area.
Spend the morning exploring the process with the outcome developing either as a functional form or sculptural wall piece
Your starter kit will allow you to continue weaving at home as the joy of coiling takes over!

Wednesday 16th July
My first class at this lovely venue in Sanderstead. This workshop is ideal for anyone wanting to learn how to make a traditional English stake and strand basket. I will be showing you the basic techniques of how to construct a small fruit basket using a wooden base as our starting point and cane which is a great material to learn with as it's easier on the hands than willow and allows you to focus on the technique and rhythm of weaving. There will be another of these workshops later on in the year starting the basket off from the base which is a little more advanced

Catalan Trays
Sunday 20th July
Catalan Trays, also known as Tension trays are a nice introduction into the world of basketweaving and produce effective results with the use of hoop making and a simple weaving technique.
Set in the peaceful grounds of Windsor Great Park we will be working in the Environmental Centre to produce a tray ideal for serving fruit or bread at a table or for display on the wall.

Harvest Baskets
Sunday 14th September
Join me at the Environmental Centre in Windsor Great Park to learn how to create a rib frame basket using English willow and a traditional weave, perfect for gathering the autumn harvest from the garden or allotment.
All materials and light refreshments are included in this seasonal workshop. But as it is a full day please you’re welcome to bring lunch with you as there are no cafes nearby.
Please aim to arrive 15 mins before the event start time so that we can make a prompt start.
